The Odyssey

Homer · translated by Samuel Butler

The Odyssey is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, the other Homeric epic. The Odyssey is a fundamental work in the modern Western canon, being the oldest extant piece of Western literature, second to the Iliad. Scholars believe the Odyssey was composed near the end of the 8th century BC, somewhere in Ionia, the Greek coastal region of Anatolia.

Patricia France and Hajra Ismail Yacooboli · College of Marin

Afrofuturism is important because it offers a chance to continue to dream. Representation matters in many different forms. In academia there are canons of literature that center whiteness, but we need to engage students in new ways that connect to their world now. As instructors who are looking for topics to engage our many diverse students, there is beauty in using Afrofuturism in a college literature course.

Literature, the Humanities, and Humanity

Steinberg · Literature, the Humanities, & Humanity

iterature, the Humanities, and Humanity attempts to make the study of literature more than simply another school subject that students have to take. At a time when all subjects seem to be valued only for their testability, this book tries to show the value of reading and studying literature, even earlier literature. It shows students, some of whom will themselves become teachers, that literature actually has something to say to them. Furthermore, it shows that literature is meant to be enjoyed.
