Cultivating Possibilities through Literacy

Cultivating Possibilities through Literacy

Kathryn Hastings & Megan Trexler · Delaware County Community College

This guidebook frames literacy learning through the 3 dimensions of the English language - etymology, morphology, and phonology and situates it within a critical literacy perspective. As such, students engage with text through five practices: (1) self-reflexive reading, (2) questioning naturalized views, (3) challenging dominant ideology, (4) generating multiplicity, and (5) reinscribing power dynamics. These practices foster awareness and agency over the use of language and literacy.

The Odyssey

Homer · translated by Samuel Butler

The Odyssey is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, the other Homeric epic. The Odyssey is a fundamental work in the modern Western canon, being the oldest extant piece of Western literature, second to the Iliad. Scholars believe the Odyssey was composed near the end of the 8th century BC, somewhere in Ionia, the Greek coastal region of Anatolia.

Concordia University Chicago Prayerbook

Chad Kendall, Patrick Bayers, Karen Calendo, Meghan Sleezer, David Rognar, Mary Zaharis, Concordia University Chicago · Concordia University Chicago

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) is a Trinitarian and confessional church body centered on the cross and atonement of Jesus Christ, while finding great value in the church's liturgical life with its seasons, feast days, and commemorations. The Bible teaches as it reveals God and His will to humanity. The Scriptures teach us how to pray as well. The life of faith, then, is one of listening to the teachings of our Lord through the scriptures and then speaking to Him through our prayers.

The Bright Continent - African Art History

Kathy Curnow · Cleveland State University

We come to art from various points. Some are out for a stroll and stumble upon objects that grab their attention. Others are equipped with guidebooks, methodically approaching and regularly revisiting both actual and virtual works. Still other viewers revel in the familiar, remaining attentive to details that cement life-long friendships. African art is no different. For some, it may initially hold few clues that help un-pack its meaning.
