Forest Measurements: An Applied Approach

Joan DeYoung · Mt. Hood Community College

This is a forest measurements textbook written for field technicians. Silvicultural applications and illustrations are provided to demonstrate the relevance of the measurements. Special “technique tips” for each skill are intended to help increase data collection accuracy and confidence. These include how to avoid common pitfalls, effective short cuts, and essentials for recording field data correctly. The emphasis is on elementary skills; it is not intended to be a timber cruising guide.

Applied Geometric Algebra (Tisza)

László Tisza · Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Over the last 100 years, the mathematical tools employed by physicists have expanded considerably, from differential calculus, vector algebra and geometry, to advanced linear algebra, tensors, Hilbert space, spinors, Group theory and many others. These course notes attempt at bringing conceptual clarity and unity to the application and interpretation of these advanced mathematical tools.

Math 110: Applied College Mathematics

Leanne Merrill · Western Oregon University

This book is intended for use with Math 110: Applied College Mathematics at Western Oregon University. The text addresses the study of rates, proportions and percent in applications; investigation into various types of data and ways to describe, represent and analyze data; and study of polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and power families of functions for use in modeling real-world data.

Applied Linear Algebra and Differential Equations

Jeffrey R. Chasnov · Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

These lecture notes are for a mathematics course offered to second-year engineering students. Material from our usual courses on linear algebra and differential equations have been combined into a single course (essentially, two half-semester courses) at the request of our Engineering School. I have tried my best to select the most essential and interesting topics from both courses, and to show how knowledge of linear algebra can improve students’ understanding of differential equations.

Introduction to Applied Nuclear Physics

Paola Cappellaro · Massachusetts Institute of Technology

This text covers basic concepts of nuclear physics with emphasis on nuclear structure and interactions of radiation with matter. Topics include elementary quantum theory; nuclear forces; shell structure of the nucleus; alpha, beta and gamma radioactive decays; interactions of nuclear radiations (charged particles, gammas, and neutrons) with matter; nuclear reactions; fission and fusion.

Applied Combinatorics

Mitchel T. Keller & William T. Trotter · Georgia Tech & Morningside College

This book arose from our feeling that a text that met our approach to Applied Combinatorics was unavailable. Because of the diverse set of instructors assigned to the course, the standard text was one that covered every topic imaginable, but provided little depth. We took a different approach, attacking the central subjects of the course description to provide exposure, but taking the time to go into greater depth in select areas to give the students a better feel for how combinatorics works.

These course notes attempt at bringing conceptual clarity and unity to the application and interpretation of these advanced mathematical tools. In particular, there is an emphasis on the unifying role that Group theory plays in classical, relativistic, and quantum physics.

Applied Ecology

Wikipedia · Wikibooks

It is intended that this book should contain a body of knowledge about the use of ecological theory and principles to solve problems associated with the intensive human use of the environment. It is beyond our capacity to return Earth to a primeval state, but what we can do is build a technological ‘ark’ to retain as much ecological integrity as possible. To achieve this, many aspects of ecology have to be applied to manage conservation systems.

Applied Finite Mathematics

Rupinder Sekhon and Roberta Bloom · De Anza College

This text covers topics including linear equations, matrices, linear programming, the mathematics of finance, sets and counting, probability, Markov chains, and game theory. Finite Math covers a variety of topics united by their focus on mathematical techniques used in business applications. The growing field of “business analytics” encompasses many types of applications; the text gives insight to some methods used in industry, although we will explore them on a smaller scale.

Applied Discrete Structures

Al Doerr & Ken Levasseur · University of Massachusetts Lowell

Applied Discrete Structures is designed for use in a university course in discrete mathematics spanning up to two semesters. Its original design was for computer science majors to be introduced to the mathematical topics that are useful in computer science. It can also serve the same purpose for mathematics majors, providing a first exposure to many essential topics.
